3 For by the grace given me I say to every one of you: Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, in accordance with the faith God has distributed to each of you. 4 For just as each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not all have the same function, 5 so in Christ we, though many, form one body, and each member belongs to all the others. 6 We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us. If your gift is prophesying, then prophesy in accordance with your faith; 7 if it is serving, then serve; if it is teaching, then teach; 8 if it is to encourage, then give encouragement; if it is giving, then give generously; if it is to lead, do it diligently; if it is to show mercy, do it cheerfully.
While many white musicians gravitated toward country, folk, and old-timey music to express their spirituality outside of traditional Christian hymns, Black Gospel music drew heavily upon the traditional spirituals that had been passed down from the days of slavery, picking up its more driving rhythmic emphasis from blues and early jazz. Composer and singer Thomas A. Dorsey crystallized the style in 1932 with his epochal "Take My Hand, Precious Lord," and went on to compose a great many songs that later became standards. When performed in the churches, the music was traditionally sung by a choir, with individual soloists sometimes taking the spotlight; this often happened in a form known as "call and response," in which either the choir or the soloist would repeat and/or answer the lyric which had just been sung by the other, with the soloist improvising embellishments of the melody for greater emphasis. As the music developed, these soloists became more and more virtuosic, performing with wild emotion (and, in the South, physicality) in order to properly express the spiritual ecstasy the music was meant to evoke. The music was quite egalitarian in terms of gender, as both male and female performers -- Brother Joe May, Rev. James Cleveland, Mahalia Jackson, the Clara Ward Singers, etc. -- gained wide renown among both black and white audiences. The small-group format was also prevalent, with major figures including the Five Blind Boys of Mississippi, the Soul Stirrers, the Swan Silvertones, and the Dixie Hummingbirds; in general, these groups placed a greater premium on smooth vocal harmonies, although some performances could approach the raucous energy (if not quite the huge sound) of a choir-with-soloist group. As the years progressed, black gospel and black popular music influenced and borrowed from one another, reflecting the gradual change of emphasis toward R&B; black gospel also had an enormous impact on the development of soul music, which directed gospel's spiritual intensity into more secular concerns, and included a great many performers whose musical skills were developed in the church. As a recognizable style unto itself, black gospel music largely ceased to develop around the 1970s; progressing racial attitudes had helped black popular music reach wider audiences (and become more lucrative) than ever before, and tastes had turned towards the earthy hedonism of funk and the highly arranged, sophisticated Philly soul sound. The former wasn't quite appropriate for worship, and it wasn't all that practical to duplicate the latter in church services. However, the traditional black gospel sound survived intact and was eventually augmented by contemporary gospel (an '80s/'90s variation strongly influenced by latter-day urban R&B); plus, singers like Whitney Houston continued to develop within its ranks. Kris…it seems that your words always come as a fresh rain in a time of doubt. I still know that I have so very far to come and I am never going to have room for growth while still on this earth. You are the Barnabas-type if ever there was one and an encouragement which I believe is so desperately needed in the church, yes even in the unsaved world, today and is in such short supply yet in great demand. Please allow me to covet your friendship and that of your support and so I pray to God to send such godly believers of faith like you in our church which I am the under-shepherd of and where my church is so too dying of thirst and hunger in a spiritually starved world. When Samuel was seeking who would be the king of Israel, He had all of Jesse’s sons pass before him and time after time, Samuel thought that surely one of these young men would be the next king. Some were tall and muscular but that was not God’s standard. Jesse didn’t call David who was what we might call the “runt of the litter” but God said that He looks not on the outward appearance but what is inside. He doesn’t have regard for what a person’s looks are like but He looks at the heart because the most important attributes of a person are never what we see but the things we don’t see and what we cannot see, God can. That’s all that really matters. Bible Scripture Images
Sadly, many people will look at us and judge us by appearances and as we’ve already read, they can miss-read us because they don’t see what’s on the inside which is what is of ultimate importance. Jesus said “You judge by human standards; I pass judgment on no one” (John 8:15). Every time that someone looks at us and they judge us by appearances, they are judging us by human standards and very likely miss-judging us. What they can’t see is what is most important anyway. The religious leaders of Jesus’ day were only concerned with what people saw them doing but God knew their hearts and saw that they were inwardly full of sin.
And it will come about in that day, that every place where there used to be a thousand vines, valued at a thousand shekels of silver, will become briars and thorns. People will come there with bows and arrows because all the land will be briars and thorns. As for all the hills which used to be cultivated with the hoe, you will not go there for fear of briars and thorns; but they will become a place for pasturing oxen and for sheep to trample. What source did you find to say that these men talked about tongues as necessary? I have never found these sources. You said that they called down the Holy Spirit on them…and it is EXPECTED that the converts should speak in new tongues but the word tongues in the New Testament is Greek for “languages.” Even so, I emphasize the fruits of the Spirit as evidence, as Jesus said you will know them by their love and by their fruits (John 15) and not by their gifts. That is the real evidence of conversion, right? We can therefore move on to something else my friend. Bible Scripture Images
Since D Day he has been on the downward slide in every aspect of life. Depressed , hopeless, continuing to see the children he had with the OW but ‘hates’ her and himself for what they did ….14 years of lying ,cheating , stealing as he bought her a house and new Lexus and has drained all of our savings and gone into deep debt ,..which also was a result of the economic crisis of our country. Thanks Jerry. I love the grace and humility you have my friend. You wanting to share the gospel is wonderful because only 1 in 20 believers have ever led more than one person to faith in Christ. That is not good but I see you have a passion for the Great Commission. Your own personal testimony is a great way to do so. No one, as you say, can dispute this because it is objective testimony to the work of God in your life.
I grieve that he and all of us MISSED ‘ what marriage was intended to be . I often tried to tell him ‘I did not get married to be alone and to go everywhere alone’ he did not respond to this ..He was too involved with work and the OW …and finally she urged him to ‘give her children ‘ since she had ‘ used up her time to meet anyone else”! of that is what he said. He will not judge by appearance nor make a decision based on hearsay (called discernment).” These are important gifts and some of them are similar to but different from the gifts of the Spirit that Paul talks about in the New Testament in I Corinthians chapter twelve. There are nine gifts of the Spirit mentioned by Paul in I Corinthians chapter twelve: Biblical Verses Image
Thank you Shirley for your comment. I am not saying in this article that healings still do not occur but the days of just having a shadow passed over someone would heal them. Who do you know that can heal everyone in every instance like the apostles could? If so, they should empty the hospitals or children’s cancer wards. That is my point. God can heal anyone He wants and He can use anyone He wants but He never promises to heal everyone at every time, everywhere. God alone heals. It is not the person who heals but God who enables those to pray for or lay on hands for SOME to be healed but certainly not all. I am not limiting God or putting Him in a box. If you know someone who has the gift of healing, then get a camera, head to the hospitals and children’s cancer wards and empty them…and then I will believe. God does still heal yes, but not everyone. That was the same then, and yesterday, remember Paul prayed three times and was never healed. Scripture Images

Genesis 1:26-27 “Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.” So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.”
3. I believe, as I am sure you do, that Scripture teaches us about the “now” and the “not yet” of the Kingdom of God, as our Jewish counterparts were taught, and therefore until Jesus returns, as you know, not everyone we pray for to be healed is healed IN OUR TIMELINE of experience. Does this mean we should not ask? Does this not mean that we are not to be expectant, obedient? Does this not mean we should start with the small (headaches, aches) and build into our lives an expectation that he is interested in our illnesses before we visit drugstores or look in our well-stocked medicine cabinets rather than knocking hard on his door when serious illnesses draw near? I have overcome bronchitis and pneumonia in the distant past and thought those days were over. This feels like a different thing …maybe allergies….which up to now did not bother my lungs . Being in this kind of environment with long periods of rain maybe is not the best but I have always gone through without this sort of effect that has lasted so long.
What biblical or theological evidence is there that tongues have ceased? First, the gift of tongues was a miraculous, revelatory gift, and the age of miracles and revelation ended with the apostles. The last recorded miracles in the New Testament occurred around A.D. 58, with the healings on the island of Malta (Acts 28:7-10). From A.D. 58 to 96, when John finished the book of Revelation, no miracle is recorded. Miracle gifts like tongues and healing are mentioned only in 1 Corinthians, an early epistle. Two later epistles, Ephesians and Romans, both discuss gifts of the Spirit at length—but no mention is made of the miraculous gifts. Scripture Images
That is why we as believers need to learn how to be lead and taught by the Holy Spirit. Even the Bible must be taught by Him so we can get past our natural mental understanding of it. He has taught me to know when it is Him teaching because it will always produce the love of God and the love of our neighbors. Because we can think when everything is going good it is from God or when things are not going good it is not from God if we are not lead by the Holy Spirit. Bible Verse Wall Art
