The next gift Paul mentions is the gift of interpretation of tongues (v 10). This gift is someone who is able to interpret another tongue or language. I am bilingual and can speak English and Spanish but I would not say that I have this gift necessarily. Some have a natural gift or ability to learn a foreign language. It was not natural nor did it come easy for me. For those who this is easy, then they may be imbued with such a gift. If anyone was speaking in tongues in the church, there absolutely had to be someone there to interpret or they were to be silent. And no more than one person was to speak in tongues because there is only one interpreter available to translate at a time. If several were speaking in tongues at the same time, there would be confusion and God is not the author of confusion, but He is the God of order (1 Cor 14:33). It would not be edifying the church to have several speaking in tongues at the same time and with no one to interpret. Tongues are a sign for unbelievers and not for the church. Paul writes, “In the Law it is written: ‘With other tongues and through the lips of foreigners I will speak to this people, but even then they will not listen to me, says the Lord.’ Tongues, then, are a sign, not for believers but for unbelievers” (1 Cor. 14: 21-22). Isaiah 28:11-12 is where Paul quotes Isaiah the prophet, “For with stammering lips and another tongue will he speak to this people. To whom he said, ‘This is the rest wherewith ye may cause the weary to rest; and this is the refreshing: yet they would not hear.’” This clearly indicates that the gift of tongues (Greek for languages) and the interpretation of them is that of a known language as a witness to unbelievers. He really began to assert his independence covered by ‘transparent’ LYING after our first child was born and his mom died. He had a brief emotional adulterous relationship with a woman at work that I discovered and I took action to go to her and relate to her that God’s best man for any woman would not be another woman’s wife. I ministered and prayed with her …she then called me to apologize and quit her job and left town …I was not until just lately I found out that she was a married woman ! SO my husband has never been transparent and still is not being so . He simply does not have the ‘skills’ to call upon himself to be truthful . Biblical Verses Image
The first gift Paul mentions is the gift of wisdom (v 8). It is listed first perhaps because it is foundational to the church and this is a gift that the believer can earnestly desire (v 31). Wisdom is clearly taught in the Word of God and “The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom; all who follow his precepts have good understanding” (Psalm 111:10). This is the precious gift that Solomon asked for and received from God to be able to rightly rule God‘s nation (I Kings 3:12). With this wisdom, Solomon could understand what do in difficult decisions. Wisdom is also associated with fearing the Lord. Fear is simply standing in awe of God in reverence and respect. It entails loving His Word and being obedient to what it says. There is no wisdom in disobedience. This means that if some members are revering God’s laws and statutes, including loving God and loving your neighbor, that many members in the church can have this gift. Of course, many can not have it either. This gift is of supreme importance for members in the Body of Christ for if we can love God and our neighbor, we can greatly contribute to the church and those outside of the church. This love is another way of showing unbelievers and attracting them to Christ by it (John 13:35).
A talent is something that you are instinctually born with that gives you unique skills and abilities. Talent is set apart from knowledge in that it is not a learned behavior, although it can be strengthened and practiced. The Bible tells us that we are all born with distinct talents and gifts that set us apart from each other. When you discover the talents that God has given you and you use them to glorify Him, you will experience a full life! Our loving Lord wants us to feel whole and complete, and it is through talents that we can find our unique calling in life! Use these Bible verses about talents to encourage yourself and others who are seeking God's plan for their life. Biblical Verses Image

Hi Jerry…Okay if I am not misunderstanding what you are asking, wanting to know why so many Christians are against the modern practice of tongue while they easily accept the other gifts of the spirit, the simplest answer is that the time for tongues as a gift benefiting the church has past with pentecost. As Pastor Jack said many time before, this was a signs gift given to glorify God and prove Christ deity! Just like so many big in your face miracles like the feeding of the loaves and fish. These things proved to the Jews and the gentiles that Christ was the son of God. It was also necessary for the spreading of the word and the formation of the new church. This is why it was never to be used in public without an interpreter…It was so that foreigners could understand what was being preached and to provide prophesy. The reason we do not practice it today is because it is simply not needed in the modern church. The time of prophesy has ended and we are in the time of the fulfillment of prophesy for the coming of the end times. We can preach in any language needed either because we have ministers of all nationalities and in most every country, or we can use interpreters. Miracles do still happen and so they are still a valid church gift of the Spirit but even those have changed…We have miracles happen all around us if we open our eyes and accept God, we can see them. However we no longer need the parting of seas, etc. We don’t need big signs to say see God is real…believe! The bible tells us that once the church was established and Christ had returned to his father, we are to believe by faith, not signs. When big churches tell people they must speak in tongues to show salvation, that is not biblical teaching. Also the fact they have no interpreters is not biblical. Finally the fact that many times they are in a frenzy and babbling in no actual language is not biblical, not of God, and sometimes possibly of the enemy not God! God is never the Lord of confusion! With that said, the bible says if it is done in private ( such as in your own Prayer life), because it can not be translated, it is to remain between you and God! I won’t say it could not happen in private but than that makes it a personnel experience and therefore not a gift of the Spirit…Gift of the spirit are not for personnel edification! So as long as this is not happening in church without proper interpretation, than that is between you and God. The other gift that are not signs gifts are still in use/effect today because they have a place in the edification of the whole church. I am sure that if you have tongues as a private gift, you still have one or two more gifts that fall into the catagory of Gifts of the Spirit which are still needed and used validly within the church today! However, the most important gift should be seen within all believers and that is thee most important Fruit of the Spirit…Charity/Love…That which we are all to be known by! Scripture Images

Now you are Christ's body, and individually members of it. And God has appointed in the church, first apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, administrations, various kinds of tongues. Ephesians 4:11 reveals yet more gifts as Paul indicates there are, “…apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the pastors and teachers.” Again teachers are mentioned, evangelists are those who are unusually gifted at sharing the gospel with the lost, pastors and prophets (again, this is those who proclaim the gospel). Apostles can no longer exist because by definition, they would be those church leaders who have been commissioned by the risen Christ and having been done so in His presence. Those who call themselves apostles have no such authority given by God and they are self-designated only, thusly disqualifying themselves as a true apostle.
Sadly, many people will look at us and judge us by appearances and as we’ve already read, they can miss-read us because they don’t see what’s on the inside which is what is of ultimate importance.  Jesus said “You judge by human standards; I pass judgment on no one” (John 8:15).  Every time that someone looks at us and they judge us by appearances, they are judging us by human standards and very likely miss-judging us.  What they can’t see is what is most important anyway.  The religious leaders of Jesus’ day were only concerned with what people saw them doing but God knew their hearts and saw that they were inwardly full of sin. Country music is a wildly popular genre, but there are other sub-genres that could exist beneath it, such as Christian country music (CCM). CCM, sometimes called country gospel or inspirational country, blends the style of country with biblical lyrics. Like country music itself, it is an expansive genre, and no two CCM artists will sound exactly alike.

But the free gift is not like the transgression. For if by the transgression of the one the many died, much more did the grace of God and the gift by the grace of the one Man, Jesus Christ, abound to the many. The gift is not like that which came through the one who sinned; for on the one hand the judgment arose from one transgression resulting in condemnation, but on the other hand the free gift arose from many transgressions resulting in justification. For if by the transgression of the one, death reigned through the one, much more those who receive the abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness will reign in life through the One, Jesus Christ.
For by the grace given me I say to every one of you: Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, in accordance with the faith God has distributed to each of you. For just as each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not all have the same function, so in Christ we, though many, form one body, and each member belongs to all the others. We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us. If your gift is prophesying, then prophesy in accordance with your faith; if it is serving, then serve; if it is teaching, then teach; if it is to encourage, then give encouragement; if it is giving, then give generously; if it is to lead, do it diligently; if it is to show mercy, do it cheerfully. A Psalm for giving thanks. Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the earth! Serve the Lord with gladness! Come into his presence with singing! Know that the Lord, he is God! It is he who made us, and we are his; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture. Enter his gates with thanksgiving, and his courts with praise! Give thanks to him; bless his name! For the Lord is good; his steadfast love endures forever, and his faithfulness to all generations. Bible Verse Wall Art
Its been a while. My wife and I are doing so great! I pray all is well with you! I have a question about tongues. Is my perception of tongues correct, in that, it would only be used (by God through the gifted person) in a crowd of which the gifted person does not natively speak their language? I do not see how we can benefit from going into a church where all speak English, and yet, people are speaking a jibberish type language, with and without translation. I love your write up on the gifts. Very detailed. My wife and I are studying it right now.

These days it is difficult to hear how many believers have married those who they thought were of equal devotion to the Lord but due to wrong teaching, lack of knowledge of the Word and time applying it, often because we now have GENERATIONS not trained up in the things of GOD by parents who GOD ordained to do so ..and even if they were kids in church the churches have long since fallen away from godly right teaching in many instances….SO we have a lack of knowing what to look for and how to determine the true devotion of anyone who claims the Lord …until there has been sufficient time in study and right doctrinal instruction for a person newly entering into Christ. The next gift of the Spirit Paul mentions is the gift of faith (v 9). Those with this gift are truly amazing in how they see things. They tend to exude confidence in all situations. For example, our church deacon has said about our church growth “when” it grows we will need more Sunday school books, while others say “if” we grow we will need additional books. I met an evangelist once that spoke about things as if they already had existed or had come to pass. He spoke about finances that God would provide while simultaneously have nothing to show for it in the church’s bank account. He would always later prove to be right. This is a person more like God. He sees things that aren’t as if they already are!
I was not even aware that there was a NAME for this kind of thing until more recent years …it was “Higher Criticism’ that was one of the key elements along with many other ‘isms’ added to the faith …going back to the most basic way that the Serpent used and still finds most effective to deconstruct people’s hope in learning truth from the Bible , the scriptures that are GOD breathed and trustworthy are being ripped apart by anti christian ‘scholars’ who are nothing more than skeptics and workers of evil intent upon destroying the faith of those who are unstable and unlearned at the earliest age possible. Seven years ago I discovered quite by accident materials from his relationship with the OW of his adulterous arrangment of 14 years. Two children’s photos brought me to my knees as I had NO idea that this man who was so proud of his image of integrity could be the father.Yet he admitted that he had created this second ‘family ‘ but he and the OW had had NO intention of marriage.

The next gift of the Spirit is that of knowledge (v 8). Some people have such a gift of remembering scriptures. They have knowledge of God and His ways. They seem to be able to quickly distinguish which is biblical and which is not. Some translations say it is the “Word” of knowledge while others say that it is the “utterance” of knowledge. The Word is most certainly the Word of God. The “utterance” of knowledge could indicate that those with the gift of knowledge know when to speak particular words, when not to, and what words to speak with. Both words seem to fulfill what true knowledge is. These with this gift make excellent teachers, deacons, elders, or pastors.
How true this is.  You can put lipstick and earrings on a pig but inwardly they’re still a pig so Peter writes that “the hidden person of the heart” is precious to God and the “imperishable beauty of a gentle and quite spirit” to God is “very precious” and that’s all that matters eternally.  We’ll all get new bodies someday anyway and so why should we be so preoccupied with what we look like when God only cares about what we are like on the inside?

Jack Wellman is a father and grandfather and a Christian author, freelance writer, and Prison Minister. Graduate work at Moody Bible Institute. The book of Acts show many examples of new Christians receiving the Spirit and speaking in tongues, but it also speaks of people believing the gospel without this experience. I don’t believe that one who does not “speak in tongues” is not indwelt by the Holy Spirit which we all receive when we are born again. I also don’t believe the tongues described in Acts chapter 2 and the tongues spoken of in 1st Cor. 12-14. You say that Paul was reproving the Corinthian church for using tongues in a pagan way. The scriptures do not say this. I believe Paul was telling them this and all other gifts were to be used for the edifying of the church and if others could not understand what was being said it would not edify them. Or if an unbeliever would come into a meeting with several people speaking in tongues they would think the church was a bunch of lunatics. Paul says that whoever speaks in an unknown tongue should pray for the interpretation of it so the church could be edified. Tongues described in 1stCor. Is a gift where believer can pray to God “spirit to Spirit” 1Cor. 14:14-15. I do not believe these tongues were meant to be understood by the human mind. Biblical Verses Image

For by the grace given to me I say to everyone among you not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think with sober judgment, each according to the measure of faith that God has assigned. For as in one body we have many members, and the members do not all have the same function, so we, though many, are one body in Christ, and individually members one of another. Now concerning spiritual gifts, brothers, I do not want you to be uninformed. You know that when you were pagans you were led astray to mute idols, however you were led. Therefore I want you to understand that no one speaking in the Spirit of God ever says “Jesus is accursed!” and no one can say “Jesus is Lord” except in the Holy Spirit. Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; and there are varieties of service, but the same Lord; ...
From the standpoint of the gospel they are enemies for your sake, but from the standpoint of God's choice they are beloved for the sake of the fathers; for the gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable. For just as you once were disobedient to God, but now have been shown mercy because of their disobedience, so these also now have been disobedient, that because of the mercy shown to you they also may now be shown mercy. 3. I believe, as I am sure you do, that Scripture teaches us about the “now” and the “not yet” of the Kingdom of God, as our Jewish counterparts were taught, and therefore until Jesus returns, as you know, not everyone we pray for to be healed is healed IN OUR TIMELINE of experience. Does this mean we should not ask? Does this not mean that we are not to be expectant, obedient? Does this not mean we should start with the small (headaches, aches) and build into our lives an expectation that he is interested in our illnesses before we visit drugstores or look in our well-stocked medicine cabinets rather than knocking hard on his door when serious illnesses draw near? Jesus says in John 6:63 that it is the Spirit that gives life and the flesh does not profit us. He also states His words are Spirit and they are life. The Lord has shown me through Romans 8:2 that we will either receive His word as the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus, when taught by the Holy Spirit. Where we will receive the life and strength to walk in it, by the grace and power of the Holy Spirit. Or we will receive it as the law of sin and death where are trying to understand it with our own carnal understanding and try to walk in it by our own strength. This will put is the position that Paul saw himself as described in Romans chapter 7.
Hello i’m new to these pages of faith, and i did not look at any of the comments that anyone made, just because i didn’t want it to influence what i was about to say.I was reading what was said about healing and the ability of healing. It is very real and something i have experienced first hand. When i was around the age of 13 i was struck by a car,i was under the car and i was covered in white snow( which contributed to me being here today speaking of this) well i was pulled out by my brother and i stood up from the fright shook myself off as if nothing ever happened. The person that hit me was so scared and looked as if he was about to have a coronary of his own, i assured him that i was fine and not to worry, that he could go home. Well the next day i go to get up from bed and i feel an immense pain in my hip when i went to move my legs.I yelled for my parents and let them know that i could not walk. They got me dressed(with allot of pain and yelling from me) and took me to the doctor. The doctor exams me, sends me for x-rays(more movement, more yelling from me),the results show that a bone in my hip had been dislocated, and that it was where all my pain was coming. My parents where informed by the doctor that it could go back into place by itself in a couple of days, or that i would have to be operated on,and correct the problem,at the tune of about 6500.my parents didn’t have, or could come up with. I was taken home and we hoped and prayed for a miracle. Well at around this time i had a friend named Richie,he lived across the street from me and he had heard what had happened. It was day two and the pain had not gotten any better, everything i did was extremely unpleasant. My friend Richie was over and he saw what i was going through and suggested i go to his church and have the congregation pray over me. At the time i thought this was a little crazy, but i was also curious because my friend had mentioned this to me and i found it odd that he believed this could help. I waited two more days, decided i would take him upon his offer and go to his church, i was carried into his car driven to the church, and carried to the front of the pues by the pulpit. I was introduced to the pastor, they asked him if he could have the congregation pray over me,he agreed. When the service was about to begin the pastor introduced me to everyone, and let’s them know that i was a visitor from another church and to welcome me. We had the service and before it was over we get to the point where we pray for the sick.Well when they get to me the pastor tells everyone if they would kneel, and direct all their prayers to the Lord for me,(i have always been christian, and a believer, but have never witnessed anything like this before)the pastor lays his hand on my head ,and my hip and they pray. The truth of this story is that i felt an energy of happiness, and a tingling sensation in my affected area,my whole body felt this incredible feeling. I was then told to stand up and walk, but in my heart it was not the pastors voice that was telling me but the voice of my lord.Tears of joy from me ,and praises to Jesus from everyone,i was walking with no hint of pain or discomfort. I had been healed by my father that day, and i believe the power of prayer , and my faith in him is what made me walk out of their…PRAISE JESUS ,PRAISE THE LORD… Bible Scripture Images
Paul knew that the outward man or woman was perishing, day by day, and as he said “was wasting away” but the most important work was being done inwardly by the Spirit of God and this was the renewal that each believer in Christ is undergoing, day by day.  God’s Spirit works to convict us of sin, He works to make us more like Christ, and our sanctification is a lifelong process and even though we might be falling apart outwardly, what is eternal is what is inside and that’s the only thing that counts. We are new creations in Christ (2 Cor 5:17) even though the outward appearance is decaying, so that’s why Paul didn’t want us to lose heart.

Each and every believer has been given by the indwelling of the Spirit of God, gifts of the Spirit (Acts 2:38).  In Acts chapter 8 and in 1 Corinthians chapters 12-14 we see external gifts of the Holy Spirit. They were not gifts that they have been developed by human capacities, therefore the believer has absolutely no right to brag on these gifts. If we exalt in our gifts, we are taking credit for something that we have not earned ourselves. It is like taking credit for a gift you receive on your birthday. It is just that; a gift that was not yours but given to your freely and it is given apart from any inherent capabilities that you have within you. It is not like changing the old hymn from How Great Thou Art to How Great I Am.
While many white musicians gravitated toward country, folk, and old-timey music to express their spirituality outside of traditional Christian hymns, Black Gospel music drew heavily upon the traditional spirituals that had been passed down from the days of slavery, picking up its more driving rhythmic emphasis from blues and early jazz. Composer and singer Thomas A. Dorsey crystallized the style in 1932 with his epochal "Take My Hand, Precious Lord," and went on to compose a great many songs that later became standards. When performed in the churches, the music was traditionally sung by a choir, with individual soloists sometimes taking the spotlight; this often happened in a form known as "call and response," in which either the choir or the soloist would repeat and/or answer the lyric which had just been sung by the other, with the soloist improvising embellishments of the melody for greater emphasis. As the music developed, these soloists became more and more virtuosic, performing with wild emotion (and, in the South, physicality) in order to properly express the spiritual ecstasy the music was meant to evoke. The music was quite egalitarian in terms of gender, as both male and female performers -- Brother Joe May, Rev. James Cleveland, Mahalia Jackson, the Clara Ward Singers, etc. -- gained wide renown among both black and white audiences. The small-group format was also prevalent, with major figures including the Five Blind Boys of Mississippi, the Soul Stirrers, the Swan Silvertones, and the Dixie Hummingbirds; in general, these groups placed a greater premium on smooth vocal harmonies, although some performances could approach the raucous energy (if not quite the huge sound) of a choir-with-soloist group. As the years progressed, black gospel and black popular music influenced and borrowed from one another, reflecting the gradual change of emphasis toward R&B; black gospel also had an enormous impact on the development of soul music, which directed gospel's spiritual intensity into more secular concerns, and included a great many performers whose musical skills were developed in the church. As a recognizable style unto itself, black gospel music largely ceased to develop around the 1970s; progressing racial attitudes had helped black popular music reach wider audiences (and become more lucrative) than ever before, and tastes had turned towards the earthy hedonism of funk and the highly arranged, sophisticated Philly soul sound. The former wasn't quite appropriate for worship, and it wasn't all that practical to duplicate the latter in church services. However, the traditional black gospel sound survived intact and was eventually augmented by contemporary gospel (an '80s/'90s variation strongly influenced by latter-day urban R&B); plus, singers like Whitney Houston continued to develop within its ranks.
I must say that I had not thought he would go as a far as he did ….14 years of having set up such a deceitful way to excuse his many absences and late returns in the evening . He mastered the ability to deceive and I was kept busy with all that I had to do at home with teaching our family …showing and selling our homes and moving alone over many many moves while he was sent ahead.
In Isaiah 55:8-11 God tells us His thoughts and ways are not the same as His. His thoughts and ways are so much higher than our own, will accomplish what He pleases, and prosper in the purpose for which He has sent. Our problem as humans is that we often receive the word according to what we think it says, trying to get it to accomplish what we please, for our purposes. But when we are learning from the Holy Spirit in reading the word, or are taught by a vessel being used by Him, we will be able to go out with joy and be led forth with peace.
Since I learned that the thoughts that came to mind which were scripture were actually the way that the Spirit of GOD ‘spoke ‘ to me and that the whole word of GOD is God’s VOICE in how HE teaches us by His spirit then I became free of the way others’ who seemed to have more authority were my teachers. Lifting up men is not useful and oftentimes is destructive . This is where the false teachers take advantage for their own agendas.

They faithfully brought in the contributions and the tithes and the consecrated things; and Conaniah the Levite was the officer in charge of them and his brother Shimei was second. Jehiel, Azaziah, Nahath, Asahel, Jerimoth, Jozabad, Eliel, Ismachiah, Mahath and Benaiah were overseers under the authority of Conaniah and Shimei his brother by the appointment of King Hezekiah, and Azariah was the chief officer of the house of God. Kore the son of Imnah the Levite, the keeper of the eastern gate, was over the freewill offerings of God, to apportion the contributions for the LORD and the most holy things.
