Each and every believer has been given by the indwelling of the Spirit of God, gifts of the Spirit (Acts 2:38). In Acts chapter 8 and in 1 Corinthians chapters 12-14 we see external gifts of the Holy Spirit. They were not gifts that they have been developed by human capacities, therefore the believer has absolutely no right to brag on these gifts. If we exalt in our gifts, we are taking credit for something that we have not earned ourselves. It is like taking credit for a gift you receive on your birthday. It is just that; a gift that was not yours but given to your freely and it is given apart from any inherent capabilities that you have within you. It is not like changing the old hymn from How Great Thou Art to How Great I Am. Biblical Verses Image
Hi Jerry, Thank you for your great response. I have no doubt that the Spirit moves you in your prayer to speak in tongues. Paul said he spoke in tongues more than all of them. I just don’t happen to have that gift. I also don’t think that I have a gift of miracles either. I have some other gifts that are very strong, however, and I am prayerfully seeking His will. That is not to say that at some point God might bestow a gift of tongues upon me if it was His will and was for His glory. I read Pastor Jack’s response as well and will restate that not all people have all gifts. Paul was very clear about that point. A day may come when God needs me to speak to someone whose language I don’t know, I have no doubt that He would use me as He needed me and I would speak in tongues, as I am His willing vessel.
Don’t let a low score tell you that you are not being called into this. These tests were written by humans and not inspired by God and so just use them for a guide only. Other Christians will sometimes either confirm your calling in such an area and other times you will feel complete peace or joy about it. Let that decide and no test score alone. The Spirit never errs…but tests (and yes, I do too) are not inspired by God. Hope this helps.
A Psalm for giving thanks. Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the earth! Serve the Lord with gladness! Come into his presence with singing! Know that the Lord, he is God! It is he who made us, and we are his; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture. Enter his gates with thanksgiving, and his courts with praise! Give thanks to him; bless his name! For the Lord is good; his steadfast love endures forever, and his faithfulness to all generations.
Well said Roger. I do agree that seminary alone is not enough and too many have attended liberal seminaries. I attended Moody for a master’s and it is the most solid, theologically sound that I know of anywhere. Yes, many who came from seminary’s have strange teachings but so do those with no seminary degrees. I still believe seminary is crucial because there are lessons on interpreting scripture, hermeneutics, exegesis, and so on that help us put into the cultural context and look at the genre and to see whether Scriptures apply to us today. For example, all Scripture is written to us but not all Scripture is written for us. That is, many verses are prescriptive and some are descriptive.
So, for what it’s worth, this is God’s teaching to me by His Word on the matter. My question is why do those that speak in tongues do so? Many that practice it say it is a “prayer” language that the Spirit prays as intercessory to God. Romans 8:26,27 God shows us that we don’t have to speak ANY language for the Spirit to intercede for us. God knows ALL languages and we don’t have to speak in any language but the one we understand in our minds and when our words cannot reach the level of His Righteousness, the Spirit intercedes, not with tongues, but with “groanings too deep for words.”
I could share many more experiences of the tangible manifestation of the word of God. But I remember the Holy Spirit telling don’t go chasing after miracles, but chase after the God of the word, and miracles will come as needed. He told me that the devil knows the words of the Bible better than any Christian does. Satan can quote the Bible word for word. even letter by letter, even though he does not have the understanding of it that we can receive from the Holy Spirit. He can perform deceptive miracles, and twist our understanding of what it says. I remember my father was a member of a demonic cult that claimed to believe in Jesus. They prayed for a cousin of mine that was blind and he received his sight. Scripture Images
From the standpoint of the gospel they are enemies for your sake, but from the standpoint of God's choice they are beloved for the sake of the fathers; for the gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable. For just as you once were disobedient to God, but now have been shown mercy because of their disobedience, so these also now have been disobedient, that because of the mercy shown to you they also may now be shown mercy. For God has shut up all in disobedience so that He may show mercy to all.
I admitted to my friend that I had faked it all those years ago. I stood on the message that God had given me that I did not have to speak in tongues to know that the Spirit is alive and working in me. I already know it. And as far as other spiritual gifts? Yes, I have them. Several. But, tongues is not one of them. God has blessed me, protected me (often from myself) and humbled me over the years. I have experienced the presence of the Spirit for over 40 years.
I don’t mean to be rude but I believe in the gift of healing. For one, I have experienced it so many times in my church. If someone has a headache, backache, or even a bad back we praid over the people that had these pains and if it didn’t work the first time it worked the second. Also we have a 14 year old boy named Sam that goes to my church and he is currently in a wheel chair due to his muscle tissue deteriorating in his legs. During church camp another church came to us and asked if they could pray over him with us and so at 10:00 at night. So of course we said yes because we believe he will not be in this wheelchair for lon. So we prayed over Sam for over two hours and what we saw in that amount of time was amazing. We could literally see his muscle tissue growing back and the blood was flowing through his legs again. He felt great and we did also. He’s not out of the chair yet but people in our church and other churches have had visions of him being out of that chair and we strongly believe that. What I’m trying to say is, obvisiouly you can’t heal anyone if you don’t believe they can be healed. As long as you have the Holy Spirit in you and the faith and belief it can be done. Hi Deanna…In my experience I would say for a Christian to hear these things the answer is no. They come from Satan and the only way a Christian would hear or see these thing would be if it were a form of attack, not a gift. From experience, Spiritual attacks are scary stuff and not a gift at all! These things usually happen to discourage the believer from following the faith and lead them astray…from the path God wishes for them. I have known them to occur people who have been involved in things of the occult and they were attacked as they found their faith. Satan didn’t want them to go to God! Other times, Ministers and those who are currently being used by God for something, have been attacked spiritually in such ways. However Spiritual attack can come in many forms, not just the supernatural scary stuff. In my case, as I learn how to repel one type of attack, Satan hits me the next time with something stronger and unfamilar. He is not very nice as I am sure you know and will try anything to keep us from full filling Gods plan. Bible Verse Wall Art
1 “Be careful not to practice your righteousness in front of others to be seen by them. If you do, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven. 2 “So when you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpets, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets, to be honored by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. 3 But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, 4 so that your giving may be in secret. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. Biblical Verses Image
Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen. For by it the people of old received their commendation. By faith we understand that the universe was created by the word of God, so that what is seen was not made out of things that are visible. By faith Abel offered to God a more acceptable sacrifice than Cain, through which he was commended as righteous, God commending him by accepting his gifts. And through his faith, though he died, he still speaks. By faith Enoch was taken up so that he should not see death, and he was not found, because God had taken him. Now before he was taken he was commended as having pleased God. ... Bible Verse Wall Art
